Srinagar, June 29(KNB): Police have strongly refuted false and fabricated claims circulating on social media alleging a terrorist attack on a police station in Baramulla, indiscriminate firing on government offices across the town, and a purported proposal by the Chief Minister to cancel the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
In a statement issued to news agency Kashmir News Bureau, Police said the claims are completely false, baseless and devoid of any factual basis. It clarified that no terrorist attack or firing incident has taken place anywhere in Baramulla, while reports regarding the proposed cancellation of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra are also entirely false and misleading.
Police said the deliberate circulation of such fabricated content appears to be a calculated attempt to spread fear, create panic, disturb public tranquillity and undermine public confidence during the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
Taking serious note of the misinformation campaign, Police said an FIR has been registered and an investigation has been initiated. Efforts are underway to identify those responsible for creating, publishing and circulating the fake content. Police warned that strict legal action will be taken against all individuals found involved, including those who knowingly share or forward such false information with the intention of amplifying misinformation.
Appealing to the public, Police urged citizens to refrain from forwarding or sharing unverified content on social media, stating that the circulation of fake news not only creates unnecessary panic and disrupts public order but also attracts legal consequences under the law.
Police further advised people to remain calm, exercise restraint and rely only on information disseminated through official Government and Police channels.(KNB)
