Jammu, 09 April(KNB): In a significant administrative development, Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sargun Shukla has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and posted to head the Doda–Kishtwar–Ramban (DKR) Range, marking a major milestone in her career.
The promotion places her among the young and dynamic officers entrusted with maintaining law and order in one of the sensitive regions of Jammu and Kashmir. Her appointment reflects the growing confidence of the administration in her leadership abilities and field experience.
A 2012-batch IPS officer, Shukla belongs to a new generation of officers known for their professionalism, discipline, and people-centric policing approach. After clearing the highly competitive Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, she underwent rigorous training before being inducted into active service.
Over the years, she has held several key positions within the police force, gaining experience in both operational and administrative roles. Her tenure in different postings helped her build a reputation as a firm and efficient officer capable of handling challenging law-and-order situations. She has also served in command roles, including leading battalion-level units, which strengthened her leadership and crisis-management skills.
Shukla first came into the spotlight during her posting as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Leh, where she worked closely with the civil administration to ensure stability in the strategically important border district. Despite Leh being a relatively low-crime region, her approach focused on zero tolerance for even minor offences, reinforcing discipline and public trust. Her tenure reflected a blend of strict law enforcement and community engagement.
Earlier, she also served in Srinagar in traffic policing, where she earned recognition for her strict enforcement and proactive approach.
With her elevation to DIG of the DKR Range, Shukla now shoulders greater responsibilities. She will supervise police operations across multiple districts, maintain internal security in a sensitive mountainous region, coordinate with civil and military agencies, and undertake strategic planning for law and order management. The DKR range is considered crucial due to its geographical and security challenges, making her role both demanding and significant.
Though detailed academic records remain largely private, Shukla is believed to have a strong academic background, a prerequisite for clearing the UPSC examination, one of the toughest competitive exams in India.
Known for her disciplined lifestyle and decisive leadership, she is often described by colleagues as firm but fair, highly professional, and result-oriented. Her approach combines strict enforcement with sensitivity toward public concerns, making her a respected figure among peers and citizens alike.
At a relatively young age, Shukla’s rise to the rank of DIG stands out as a significant achievement. Officers at this level typically oversee large jurisdictions and handle complex policing challenges, including counter-insurgency, crime control, and public safety.
Sargun Shukla’s journey from clearing UPSC to leading a critical police range serves as an inspiration for thousands of civil service aspirants across the country. Her career highlights the importance of discipline, perseverance, and commitment to public service.
With her appointment as DIG, Sargun Shukla has taken another significant step in a promising career. As she takes charge of the DKR Range, expectations remain high that her leadership will further strengthen policing and security in the region.(KNB)
