Srinagar 27 Feb(KNB): The serene Lidder River and Ovoora Canal in Kashmir are facing an unprecedented threat from rampant illegal commercial constructions, sparking concerns about environmental degradation and ecological imbalance.
Once a lifeline for the local population, the Ovoora Canal has dried up completely, while the Lidder River, renowned for its crystal-clear waters, has witnessed a significant decline in water levels. The unchecked proliferation of hotels and structures along their banks is the primary reason behind this environmental degradation.
These illegal constructions have not only marred the natural beauty of the area but also posed a significant threat to the local ecosystem. The Lidder River and Ovoora Canal support a diverse range of flora and fauna, which are now facing extinction due to habitat destruction.

According to sources, The local authorities’ inaction has emboldened builders to continue their destructive activities, forcing residents to grapple with the consequences, including water scarcity, noise pollution, and loss of livelihood.
Pertain to mention, the Supreme Court has issued notices on October 2024 to various governmental bodies, including the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, in response to a PIL raising concerns about illegal constructions on river floodplains and catchments.
“It is imperative that the authorities take immediate action to stop these illegal constructions and restore the Lidder River and Ovoora Canal to their former glory. The government must also ensure that those responsible for these environmental crimes are brought to justice,” said a local
