Union Ministry of Home Affairs Expands Powers of J&K Lieutenant Governor

Srinagar 13 July(KNB): In a significant move, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has amended the Transaction of Business Rules, granting the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir increased authority over key matters.

The L-G will now have enhanced powers regarding police, public order, and All India Services (AIS) matters, subject to approval from the Finance Department. Additionally, proposals related to the appointment of the Advocate-General and prosecution sanctions will require the L-G’s prior approval.

This development comes on the heels of the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019, which led to the region’s reorganization into two Union Territories. The expansion of the L-G’s powers is seen as a significant development in the governance of Jammu and Kashmir, and is likely to have far-reaching implications for the region’s administration.

With this move, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs aims to strengthen the L-G’s role in maintaining law and order, and ensuring effective governance in the region. The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, had paved the way for the appointment of a Lieutenant Governor to administer the Union Territory. (KNB)
