Former J&K Bar Association President’s Police Remand Extended in Lawyer’s Murder Case

Jammu 01 July(KNB): A NIA court in Jammu has extended the police remand of Mian Abdul Qayoom, former president of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association, by six days in connection with the murder of advocate Babar Qadri in 2020.

Qayoom, 76, was arrested on June 25 for his alleged involvement in the murder conspiracy. The court noted that the investigation is still in its initial stage and further remand is necessary for progress in the case.

Despite Qayoom’s opposition and concerns about his health, the court granted the extension until July 6, directing adequate medical care for the accused. The prosecution argued that Qayoom is not fully cooperating with the investigation, and further detention is essential to gather more information.

The case was transferred from Srinagar to Jammu for a fair trial. Qadri, a human rights expert, was fatally shot at his residence in September 2020. The police have alleged the involvement of a Lashkar-e-Taiba commander in the killing.(KNB)
