Srinagar 15 October (KNB): Akhtar started a journey from his hometown in Gorakhpur Uttar Pradesh to build a school for underprivileged children he has been dreaming for the last 18 years. Akhtar with his team members of Lok Abhiyan (NGO) had started a non-formal education centre in urban slum of Gorakhpur in 2004. He and his friends convinced the local residents to send their children in this centre to get basic education.
Soon the number rose to 70 children in first month and 150 children in a year. Akhtar and his team focused to deliver quality education with their limited means and resources to 150 children every year. This school was running in a rented tin shed which now owns a single floor building being built by crowd funding in 2500 square feet area. This school lacks modern infrastructure but children are doing well after completing their primary education. This school may be small but it has restored constitutional right to education of these children.
Akhtar and his team Lok Abhiyan have a big dream about this school. They want these children to be taught science, computer and language from the beginning through the latest technology, so that these children do not remain untouched by the new technology and opportunities. Being a very small and crowd funded organisation it could not materialise its dreams completely, but provided quality education to underprivileged children and this is the success of the program.Team wants to bring computers, establish science lab and a lab for language learning so that these children get a fair chance in life to compete with others. To turn this dream into reality Akhtar and his friend Nitin are on a motorcycle ride of 17000kms of 21 Indian States asking the donations of Rs. 2 Crore to complete the required building and other infrastructure. They have started a campaign on their social media pages and online crowdfunding platform to raise this amount. These men will be doing this journey with very limited means.
