World Environment Day 2021: Reimagine, Recreate, Restore

Srinagar 5 June (KNB): June 5th of every year, World Environment Day is celebrated to bring awareness about the importance of nature and encourage people to take action, be it at organisational, societal or personal levels, to restore the environment.

The day is a reminder for all the human beings that the Earth is, so far, the lone planet to sustain life and it is our responsibility to take care of it’s most precious gift, nature.

Discussions about the crucial issues such as global warming, land, water and air pollution, etc. take place across the globe.

In 1972, The UN General Assembly designates 5 June as World Environment Day, marking the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The day started to be started celebrated with theme “Only One Earth” in 1974.

This year, the theme for the World Environment Day is Reimagine, Recreate and Restore. Pakistan is the global host for the day to highlight the importance of ecosystem restoration in the country.

On the day, Pakistan showcases it’s struggles and stories of nature conservation. The main event is being held in Islamabad at Jinnah Convention Centre and the Prime Minister Imran Khan is inaugurating the official activities of the day.

The day also marks the formal launch of the United Nation Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.

The United Nations Environment Programme on it’s official website said that the UN Decade Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, for the benefit of people and nature. It aims to halt the degradation of ecosystems and restore them to achieve global goals.

They said that the UN Decade is building a strong, broad-based global movement to ramp up restoration and put the world on track for a sustainable future. That will include building political momentum for restoration as well as thousands of initiatives on the ground.

Celebrating the World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed an event, jointly organized by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change through a videoconference. During the event the PM interacted with a farmer from Pune who shared his experience of organic farming and use of biofuel in agriculture.

As per a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office, Narendra Modi said that India has taken another leap by releasing a detailed roadmap for the development of the ethanol sector on the occasion of World Environment Day.

PM said that ethanol has become one of the major priorities of 21st century India and that the focus on ethanol is having a better impact on the environment as well as on the lives of farmers.

Narendra Modi said that the Government has resolved to meet the target of 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol by 2025.

During the event, The Prime Minister announced that the government has identified 11 sectors, which can make good use of resources by recycling them through modern technology.

Narendra Modi stressed that to protect the climate, it is very important to organize our efforts to protect the environment and urged that we will be able to give a safe environment to our coming generations only when every citizen of the country makes a united effort to maintain the balance of water, air and land.
