Srinagar, Feb 01 (KNB): The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday said 164 incidents of Braid Chopping occurred in the valley during last year, whereas three accused persons including a lady were arrested in these incidents that created a mass hysteria and panic through the length and breadth of the Valley.
In a written reply to the question by three members of opposition party National Conference Altaf Ahmad Wani , Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar and Abdul Majeed Larmi , Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti replied that the highest number of incidents of Braid chopping took place in Srinagar (38) followed by Islamabad with the number of incidents of 26 , followed by kulgam where 25 incidents took place ,Budgam (22) , Pulwama (12), Bandipora (10), Baramulla (09), Ganderbal (06), Awantipora (05), Shopain (05), Kupwara (05) and Handwara with only 1 incident.
Mehbooba Mufti, who is the Home Minister of the state as well informed the house that two persons namely Muhammad Aslam Shah s/o Abdul Gani Shah and Adil Ahmad Shah s/o Abdul Hameed Shah both residents of Bamroda Khag of district Budgam were arrested and an FIR No: 214/2017 was also filed. Besides these two, a lady Zareefa D/o Muhammad Ibrahim Khan of Shalkoote , Balhama district Baramulla was also arrested in this connection and an FIR (189/2017) was also filed against her.
“The challan in both the cases has been produced before the court. All possible measures were taken to curb such incidents within shortest possible time, No braid chopping incident has been reported since 08/11/2017” the minister said and added that no compensation was given to the victims.
‘The Hair Maze’ a short movie was made by a group of youth in Kashmir to highlight the broader message with reference to menace of Braid Chopping was released amid the high velocity of incidents.
A media agency earlier reported that at least 200 women in Kashmir reportedly were attacked by masked men resorting to braid chopping. A number of men including tourists mistaken as Braid Choppers were beaten to pulp leaving the Valley on edge. (KNB)
