Handwara 21 Feb(KNB):The residents of shanoo(Tawheed abad) area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara District are up in arms against Power Development Development (PDD) for failing to replace their damaged transformer thus leaving the residents in darkness from past many months.
Chanting slogans against Power Development Department (PDD), the protesters blocked the vehicular movement. The protesters were demanding replacement and restoration of the power supply as their damaged transformer is lying in PDD workshop from last many days.Locals while talking to Kashmir News Bureau said that the 63KV transformer installed in their area often develops snag due its low capacity. “Despite our repeated pleas, the PDD has ignored our demand of installing high capacity transformer. So taking to streets is our last resort as we want our voice should be heard,” they added.
The residents also told that a 63 KV transformer couldn’t suffice for load of the 32 households. The residents threatened to cut the electricity lines in the area if a 100 KV or high capacity transformer is not allotted to them.
Our transformer which is 63KV capacity has been damaged nine times due to overload and was taken to PDD workshop for the repairing but unfortunately due to its low it couldn’t suffice for the load of the 32 households which leads to frequent power cuts and snags in the transformer told Auqaf committee members of the village while talking to Kashmir News Bureau. From last two consecutive months our village is facing immense hardships and frequent non availability of power supply is forcing us to live in darkness they added.
Protesting locals said that “we many times requested PDD authorities to replace the low capacity of transformer of the village with a high capacity transformer so that it can tolerate and suffice the load of all households of the village but all in vain.
Villagers appealed governor and chief engineer PDD to intervene and requested to install high capacity transformer in the village so that the common masses will not face any hardships.
